Oxy Qatar and GDI sign US$75 million drilling service contract

Occidental Petroleum Corporation (Oxy Qatar) has signed a US$75mn contract with Gulf Drilling International (GDI) to provide drilling services for an oil rig offshore Qatar

The two-year contract is for the continued use Al Rayyan rig situated on the Idd Al Shargi field, Oxy Qatar sources said.

GDI’s Al-Wajba, currently drilling for Oxy Qatar’s Al Rayyan oilfield, had returned to service after completing its periodic maintenance, which has led GDI to maintain a 100 per cent utilisation rate for all its drilling fleet.

Steve Kelly, president of Oxy Qatar, said, “Over the past five years, Oxy Qatar has developed a strong working relationship with GDI, which focuses on operational excellence and a proactive safety culture. The results have been impressive. Our continuing partnership with GDI will be key to the success of our future development plans and we look forward to maintaining and further improving performance in the coming years.”

GDI has already started implementing its expansion plan, which includes construction and placing into operation of three offshore rigs in Qatar, in addition to new product line of accommodation jack-up barges.

Ibrahim Jassim al-Othman, chief executive officer of GDI in Qatar, said that this contract represented the second consecutive contract using the Al Rayyan drilling rig.
