Oilfield services company Halliburton has launched the EarthStar ultra-deep resistivity service for well logging
Halliburton said that the logging-while-drilling technology helps operators map reservoir and fluid boundaries more than 61m from the wellbore. This is more than double the depth of investigation available with currently available services.
“We are excited to release what is truly a disruptive technology that enables operators to see farther into the reservoir while drilling than ever before. The launch of EarthStar resulted from collaboration with customers to engineer a solution that enhances reservoir understanding and helps reduce well time,” said Lamar Duhon, vice-president of Halliburton Sperry Drilling.
Halliburton said in a press release that an operator had recently used the service in a mature carbonate field to identify remaining oil within a partially water-flooded reservoir.
According to the statement, the operator considered halting drilling but EarthStar data showed a second oil deposit about 15m below the well.
Carbonate reservoirs, where it is estimated that more than 60 per cent of the world's oil is held, have highly varying properties within small sections of the reservoir, making them difficult to characterise.
An accurate study of reservoirs helps engineers make efficient production schedules, helping operators cut exploration costs.
