Samsung Engineering has been awarded the Yanbu refinery expansion project from Saudi Aramco Lubricating Oil Refining Company (Luberef) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
A statement from the South Korean firm said that the president and chief executive officer of Luberef, Ali Al Hazmi, met with executive vice president of marketing at Samsung Engineering, Kim Dong Woon, to ink the US$871mn.
Luberef, who is 70 per cent owned by Saudi Aramco and 30 per cent by Saudi Jadwa Industrial Investment, has commissioned Samsung Engineering for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the refinery on a lump sum turn-key basis.

The scope of work includes a hydrocracking unit, ISO-dewaxing complex, a hydrogen manufacturing sulfur recovery complex among other additions such as substations and cooling towers. The expansion of the refinery will boost the overall capacity from 280,000 tonnes per year to 710,000 tonnes per year of base oil.
