Five presented with International Energy Awards in Qatar

The inaugural Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah International Energy Awards have been announced in Doha to honour individuals for their contribution to the global energy industry

The awards, in collaboration with Gulf Intelligence and ExxonMobil, were set up to honour the legacy of HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority.

The first annual awards ceremony, held at the W Hotel, featured five 'lifetime achievement' categories. Guests included Fuad Siniora, former prime minister of Lebanon, Ibrahim Ibrahim, economic advisor to HH the Emir and Governor William Weld, former governor of Massachusetts.

HE Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada, minister of energy and industry, was awarded the lifetime achievement for the advancement of Qatar's energy industry.

Sheikh Nahyan Mabarak al-Nahayan, UAE's minister for higher education and scientific research, won the lifetime award for the advancement of future energy leaders, and Abdalla Salem El Badri, secretary general of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, picked up the achievement award for the advancement of OPEC.

The remaining two accolades went to Dr Mark Weichold, CEO of Texas A&M University at Qatar, awarded for the advancement of education, and Randa Takkieddine, Paris correspondent for Al Hayat newspaper, who won the award for the advancement of energy journalism.

Al-Attiyah said, “The award winners are recognised for an outstanding record of accomplishment in their sector over the whole of a career."
