Jazan Refinery to get new gas leak detection system

Health & Safety

Petrofac has awarded a contract to Bertin Technologies to supply, install and commission a pioneering gas leak tracing system for Saudi Aramco’s Jazan Refinery

The Second Sight 2 gas leak tracing technology has been adapted to adhere to IECEx3 hazardous area and Saudi Aramco standards. Bertin Technologies will also provide a turnkey solution to detect and monitor explosive gas clouds.

Bertin Technologies’ latest gas leak detection system has been chosen by Petrofac and Saudi Aramco, mainly because it is being considered a breakthrough device, said the company. It offers a range of benefits that complement conventional gas detection methods – real time visualisation, localising leakage and detecting the presence as well as direction of explosive gas clouds in the vicinity.

Second Sight provides continuous wide area coverage per device, with typical spans of 700m in length by 500m in width. With fields of view of 30° to 60°, the device can supervise entire sectors of a plant with detailed spatial resolution. BertinTech1

“While setting an advanced level in chemical and oil and gas safety standards, Bertin Technologies has demonstrated its agility in combining multiple fields of expertise in order to develop dedicated systems for demanding requirements,” said company president Philippe Demigné.

At the Jazan refinery, Second Sight cameras will be installed on high masts or on the existing plant structure. They will then be connected to the main communication infrastructure to send a live view and associated detection information to the operator in a security room.

Gases such as methane, butan, LPG in addition to toxic industrial compounds such as ammonia and sulfur dioxide can be detected by the device. Due the infrared technology, Second Sight is unaffected neither by humidity, carbon dioxide nor atmospheric constituents present in a plant atmosphere.
