With workplace accidents generating high cost and including a severe human toll that impacts morale and productivity, Brady Corporation has provided guidelines aiming to prevent accidents and manage safety risks at workplaces
Brady's guidebook has provided an insight in the main safety risks in industrial sectors, which includes components and tips to create a go for zero safety programmes and presents tool to implement it on the workfloor.
According to Brady, the management need to establish smart workplace safety objectives and emphasise management accountability for the safety record of their team members. The management should also provide a way for employees to report unsafe conditions without fear of retaliation, which is essential to identify and control hazards, install engineering controls, purchase protective equipment and train employees in safety and health.
In order to increase the safety communications with the employees, the management need to use language of the employees or use diagrams, drawings and signs in multi-lingual environments, said Brady. A safety and health committee can be established to review workplace inspections, submit recommendations and report. Apart from this, the management can enable employees to add unsafe situations, near misses and accidents in existing customer relationship management-systems (CRM).
There is a need to develop an effective hazards control system to ensure that safe work practices are being followed and unsafe conditions are identified and corrected. The trained personnel should carry out inspections on a regular basis to check whether protective equipment is available and maintained in safe and good working condition. Employees should also be encouraged to report potentially hazardous situations.
Training enables employees and supervisors to do their job properly and puts safety policy into action, said Brady. An effective training programme ensures that all employees are knowledgeable about the materials and equipment they are working with, what known hazards are present and how they are controlled.
According to Brady, accident or near-miss investigations should be written completely and conducted by trained individuals. This will help them to understand why the accident or near miss occurred and which actions can be taken to avoid them.
