Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas firm, Saudi Aramco has announced that construction has started for its Midyan gas plant in a move to increase its gas output to meet growing domestic demand

The recent signing of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the gas plant with the India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) marked the official start of the project, Saudi Aramco recently said in a statement.

The plant, located about 195km west of Tabuk and 135km north of Duba, is expected to be fully operational by 2016.

The field, which was discovered in 1992 and has significant gas reserves, is expected to produce 2.1mn standard cubic metres a day of non-associated gas and 4,500 barrels a day of condensate.

Saudi Aramco also plans to build two pipelines, total length measuring 98km, to deliver sales gas and stabilised hydrocarbon liquids to a power plant near Duba to generate electricity, company sources said.

The firm’s gas production averaged 303mn cubic metres a day in 2012 from 279mn cubic metres a day in 2011, while gas reserves rose to 8.06 trillion standard cubic metres from eight trillion standard cubic metres.
