Barzan Gas Project expected to begin production by year-end

Qatar’s Barzan gas project is expected to begin production by the end of this year, according to a report by the Qatar National Bank (QNB)

The GCC nation’s domestic gas consumption has grown by 80 per cent in the past five years – it increased from 24.9 bcm in 2009 to 44.8 bcm in 2014 – mainly propelled by increasing demand for electricity and water.

The Barzan gas project was approved in 2011, with ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum (QP) signing agreements on the same, said the project website. LNG enterprise RasGas is managing the project, added the website.

The main drilling platform to supply the gas plant is located 80 km northeast of Ras Laffan Industrial City, with onshore and offshore facilities to be completed by Japan’s JGC and South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries.
