UAE's Lamprell delivers jack up rig to Indian firm

Exploration & Production

UAE-based Lamprell has announced the completion of construction on the jackup rig Greatdrill Chaaya and its delivery to Greatship Global Energy Services

The engineering and contracting services firm completed the rig at its Hamriyah facility within budget, and within 18 months and 3.9mn manhours. The rig has now been shipped to India where it will be contracted to ONGC.

With this delivery, Lamprell has now completed a total of 12 new build jackup drilling rigs, five of the ‘LeTourneau Super 116 E’ design and seven of the ‘Friede & Goldman Super M2’ design.

The Greatdrill Chaaya, weighing 10,394 tonnes, is a LeTourneau Super 116E with a self-elevating, 145.39 metres leg design. To allow the unit to operate in India’s offshore waters, Lamprell modified the spud can design in order to reduce soil bearing pressure.

The firm has seven more LeTourneau rigs at various stages of construction.

“I am pleased to mark the completion and delivery of this rig to Greatship," said Lamprell chief executive Peter Whitbread.

"We proceeded on the basis of an aggressive fabrication schedule and so we have achieved an excellent result with this completion. It is further evidence of Lamprell’s capabilities and competencies in this core business.

"We are proud that Greatship has chosen to partner with Lamprell for this latest addition to their jackup fleet and we hope to continue building on this relationship in the future," he added.

Satish Sinha, vice president of drilling services at Greatship Global Energy Services, said, “This project, our first with Lamprell, has benefited from the excellent partnership between the two teams and their support divisions who worked relentlessly. This has resulted in the addition of another high quality state-of-the-art rig to our fleet that is comparable to any jackup rig built anywhere in the world."
