Sonatrach and its partner Anadarko have started production at the El Merk oilfield in Algeria
Located in Berkine basin and 350km from Algeria’s major oilfield Hassi Messaoud, El Merk’s current oil production stands at 12,000 bpd.
The output is expected to reach 127,000 bpd of crude and condensate by the end of 2013, the APS news agency said.
An oil industry source said, “Production started on 15 March and the first crude was supplied from the field on 3 May.”
El Merk is also expected to produce 30,000 bpd of LPG by the end of 2013.
The proven reserves in the oilfield amount to 1.2bn barrels of oil and condensate, official sources added.
