Shell and QP plan major gas complex development in Qatar

Petrochemicals

Shell and Qatar Petroleum (QP) have agreed to carry out the next project definition phase of front end engineering and design (FEED) for a major petrochemicals complex in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC)

Covering an area of more than 295 sq km, RLIC is already Qatar’s key site for liquefied natural gas, and the designs under consideration would see the addition of a world-scale steam cracker and a mono-ethylene glycol plant.

The country’s minister of energy, Dr Mohamed bin Saleh Al-Sada, said, “I am pleased that QP and Shell have moved this world-class project into the FEED stage. This is a key milestone in the journey to enhance Qatar’s growing chemicals industry.”

The aim of the potential advancements to the site is to produce cost-competitive gas that will be marketed worldwide.

QP will hold an 80 per cent equity interest in the project, with Shell managing the remaining 20 per cent.

Qatar Shell executive vice president Wael Sawan noted, “I am very proud that we have been selected to partner QP in this venture, which should give Shell the opportunity to deploy the company’s innovative solutions to demonstrate our competitiveness.”

The agreement between the two companies is consistent with QP’s strategic plan to grow its petrochemicals industry and Shell’s aim to enhance its presence in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions.
