Oil and gas power solutions provider Caterpillar has launched its first data innovation lab to collate research and development (R&D) information and derive valuable insights
The lab is located in Research Park at the University of Illinois, the UK. The work at the lab will focus on exploration of emerging and disruptive data-based technologies.
Gwenne Henricks, vice-president of product development and global technology at Caterpillar, said, “The data innovation lab will lead to faster, better and more efficient innovation than ever before allowing the company to deliver even better results to its customers. With high velocity analysis of big data, research and development, professionals can tap into insights about customers’ current and future needs to optimise Caterpillar’s processes and global trends that drive technological change.
“Staffed with talent from critical fields like statistics, computer science, operations research and engineering, the labs will also tackle experimental and high-risk challenges that standard practices can not address. This will allow the company to identify and explore breakthrough and disruptive opportunities through data analysis.”
Peter Schiffer, vice-chancellor for research at University of Illinois, noted that the new lab will also help expand the university’s existing recruitment efforts by providing additional research and development opportunities for future science, technology, engineering and mathematics talent.
