Qatar has built up a two per cent stake in Frances oil giant Total since last summer, reported newspaper Les Echos.
The stake is now worth more than US$2.6 billion, according to the newspaper.
Qatar's two per cent stake now makes it one of Total's top five shareholders, behind Belgian billionaire Albert Frere, who controlled 5.6 per cent of Total at the end of 2010, and Total's workers, who collectively owned 4 per cent, according to the Total's website.
