LNG major Qatargas has announced the start of the US$1bn Jetty Boil-off Gas Recovery Project (JBOG), designed to eliminate flaring at LNG terminals in Ras Laffan Industrial City

According to Qatargas, the main shareholders in the JBOG project are Qatar Petroleum, ExxonMobil, Total, ConocoPhillips and Shell. The facilities would be operated by Qatargas and RasGas. This would be the largest LNG Boil-off Recovery Project in the world.

Through the gas recovery, 2.8bn cu/m per day of natural gas, which was being burnt and wasted during LNG ship loading, will be recovered and utilised in LNG production plants as fuel. LNG boil-off gas from the LNG carriers will be transferred to a central compression area through large diametre stainless steel pipelines. At the compression area, the gas will be compressed and sent to LNG trains for use as fuel gas or for conversion into LNG.

Qatargas estimates that over a period of 30 years, the JBOG project will save nearly 28bn cu/m per day of natural gas. In addition, these facilities would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and maintain a clean environment for the people residing in Qatar.

Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, managing director of Qatar Petroleum and chairman of the board of directors of Qatargas said, “The development of JBOG was initiated by Qatar Petroleum nearly a decade ago. It is set to become a landmark project for Qatar, underlining its commitment to balance industrial development with care for the environment. This investment by Qatar Petroleum and its partners will reduce the carbon footprint of the LNG production facilities to the minimum.”

The EPC contract for the gas recovery project was awarded to Fluor in 2010 and the principal equipment has been supplied by GE, Emerson and ABB, revealed a statement by Qatargas. The project was initiated in mid-2011 with construction being executed by Ammico, STFA, Qcon, Qatar Kentz and Medgulf.
