Oman Oil Company Exploration and Production (OOCEP) has opened a newly developed tight gas field processing plant worth US$1.3bn in Abu Butabul field in Oman

Also known as Block 60, Abu Butabul field covers 1.5bn sq m and is owned and operated by OOCEP.

Salem bin Zahir Al Sibani, CEO of OOCEP, said, “Natural gas and condensate production would gradually reach 1.98mn cu/m per day and 6,000 bpd respectively, by the middle of 2015.”

According to OOCEP, the investment in the project has amounted to US$1.3bn until the end of 2014.

The CEO added that the project was completed in a record time of three years and was considered a global record at this stage. “Oman is one of the first countries in the region to extract non-conventional gas from deep reservoirs,” he added.

“Development will continue as per the first plan for the project to reach about US$2.5bn,” Sibani added.

The gas processing plant will allow the processing and export of unconventional tight gas for the first time in Oman’s history, stated the company.

In November 2014, natural gas exports from the Abu Butabul field had reached 764,555 cu/m per day while condensates amounted to 2,500 bpd.
