Gulfsands Petroleum PLC has begun its exploration drilling programme in the Rharb Centre Permit, north Morocco, after discovering gas bearing potential, it announced yesterday
The UK-listed oil and gas exploration and production company has started drilling the first of nine planned wells, the Al Krima 1 well (AKR-1), which is intended to evaluate two Miocene aged reservoirs believed to contain the potential for gas bearing.
The reservoirs were identified after Gulfsands contracted Romanian company Prospectiuni SA to carry out a high fold 3D seismic survey on approximately 220 sq km of the Rharb permit area in June this year.
The AKR-1 dig will see the newly acquired COFOR SAS rig reach an approximate depth of 1450m and is expected to be completed within 28 days.
According to Gulfsands, the initial five wells will take approximately four months to complete, while the remaining four wells will be carried out in the second quarter of 2014.
The on-going seismic survey of the south-western part of the Rharb permit is nearly finished, with the final data capture planned for the end of October. The data obtained will then be used early next year to determine the future drilling targets for the second wave of wells in 2014.
