EmiratesLNG has announced it has secured government approval for construction of the Middle East’s first land-based Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import facility in Fujairah
The company, which is a joint venture between the UAE’s state-controlled International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) and Mubadala Petroleum, will build the new terminal at the oil port of Fujairah but has yet to determine which company will be awarded the construction contract, according to Reuters.
Ahmed Matar Al Mazrouei, chief executive of EmiratesLNG, said, “EmiratesLNG will seize this opportunity to establish itself as a key player in the Middle East within the global LNG market.”
EmiratesLNG said it was working to ensure the timely completion of the project but has not yet revealed a completion date or cost estimate.
Front End Engineering Design (FEED) services have been carried out by France’s Technip.
EmiratesLNG said the Abu Dhabi Executive Council approved the project to build the terminal, which will accommodate the largest LNG carriers and supply the UAE with around nine million tonnes of LNG per annum, with most of the gas destined for the power sector.
