Bahrain will look to award a contract for the construction of an LNG terminal by the end of 2012, according to the country’s energy minister
The minister, Abdul Hussain bin Ali Mirza, said during the Middle East Petroleum & Gas Conference (MPGC) in Bahrain that his ministry had received nine bids for the terminal, according to a report by Reuters.
Mirza estimated that the cost of the project would be between US$300 million and $1 billion, depending on which bid was selected.
"The terminal will not be ready before the end of 2014 or early 2015," Mirza added.
Once completed, the terminal would allow the country to import LNG for domestic use and help it offset growing demand for gas.
The minister also said that the main focus would be on building the terminal first and that any LNG purchase agreements would be negotiated at a later date.
