Total is weeks away from securing oil exploration licenses in the Kurdish region of Iraq, reported the Sunday Times.
Uncertainity
The paper stated that the deal could be announced within weeks, but the deal was not finalised and could still fall through, citing people close to the situation. Total has made no comment on the claims by the paper.
Sunday Times also reports that ConocoPhillips and Chevron Corp are also looking at opportunities in the area.
The second oil major
Total's move, if it comes through, would make it only the second major oil company to enter Iraqi Kurdistan. ExxonMobil was the first oil major to announce that it was entering Iraqi Kurdistan and is mobilising in Arbil, according to Reuters.
