Total has struck oil and gas on the Harir Block in Kurdistan Region of Iraq after the Mirawa-1 discovery well was drilled to a depth of 4,260 metres
Located 60km from Erbil, the well encountered significant oil and natural gas columns, with gross intervals of 300 metres of oil shows in the Jurassic and 800 metres of gas shows in the Triassic, the French energy firm said.
The well encountered light oil of 39-45º API in two Jurassic carbonate reservoirs that were successfully tested. Three drill-stem tests were conducted, with flow rates between 3,200 bpd and 3,900 bpd, Total added.
Three other formation tests confirmed the presence of gas and condensate reservoirs in the Triassic. Choked drill-stem tests flowed at approximately 566,337 cubic metres to 849,505 cubic metres per day and one of the formations also flowed at 1,700 bpd of condensate.
Arnaud Breuillac, senior vice president for the Middle East at Total Exploration & Production, said, “The discovery is very encouraging and demonstrates that our strategy to grow in this very prospective region is on the right track.”
Total has a 35 per cent working interest in the Harir Block, with operator Marathon Oil holding 45 per cent and the Kurdistan Regional Government owning the remaining 20 per cent.
