Sonatrach has discovered an oilfield with an estimated 1.3bn barrels of deposits in southern Algeria, according to sources at the countrys oil ministry
According to Algerian energy minister Youcef Yousfi, the find near Amguid Messaoud Basin was “one of the most important that Sonatrach has made in the past 20 years”.
The discovery was made 112km from the Hassi Messaoud Oil Field - the North African country’s biggest oilfield.
Yousfi added that Sonatrach would have to use non-conventional methods to extract oil from the new field.
