Maersk Oil Qatar signs a two-deal with Gulf Drilling International

Exploration & Production

Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ) has signed two new offshore Qatar rig contracts worth US$206mn with Gulf Drilling International (GDI)

According to MOQ sources, the first contract will be a two-year contract for the GDI jack-up drilling rig (B-341) and the second one is a three-year contract for a new GDI offshore accommodation jack-up rig.

In February this year, the companies had signed a contract for the offshore jack-up drilling rig — Al Jassra — which is already working in the Al Shaheen oil and gas field.

This makes the total agreements signed between MOQ and GDI worth about US$428mn in 2013.

The agreements were signed by Lewis Affleck, managing director of MOQ, and Ibrahim J al-Othman, GDI’s chief executive officer.

Jakob Thomasen, chief executive officer of Maersk Oil, said, “In close partnership with Qatar Petroleum, Maersk Oil operates Qatar’s largest offshore oil field — Al Shaheen. Al Shaheen is one of the most complex fields in the world.

“Many more wells will be needed in the future to help successfully unlock the potential of the Al Shaheen field, and we are, therefore, very pleased to continue our work with GDI.”
