The Organization of Arab Exporting Countries (OAPEC) has announced that 34 new oil and 10 natural gas discoveries were made in 2013

OAPEC’s monthly report said that the most prominent discovery was in Algeria’s southern region of Hassi Messaoud.

Oil was discovered in the region containing around 1.3bn barrels.

The report added that the discovery of an estimated 71bn cubic metres of natural gas at Qatar’s Al-Shimal field was the highlight natural gas discoveries of 2013.

OAPEC members embarked on several key projects in 2013, said the report, noting that Saudi Arabia had begun its Karan gas project, which produces 4.2mn cubic meters of gas per day.

The Kingdom has also embarked on its heavy crude oil project at the Manifa Refinery, which will produce around half a million barrels per day.
